An 18-year-old man who allegedly escaped custody following his arrest for suspicion of domestic violence was back behind bars Saturday.

Nicholas Gabriel Rodriguez was initially arrested on suspicion of assaulting his girlfriend, who is 9 months pregnant, at an address on Marilla Drive Friday night, sheriff’s Lt. Dave Schaller said.

He somehow managed to slip out of his handcuffs at the sheriff’s station at 9750 Winter Gardens Blvd., and escaped through the back door, Schaller said.

Shortly before 1:30 a.m., deputies were wrapping up their search for the missing arrestee when callers alerted them to his hideout under a pile of debris. A helicopter crew picked up his heat signature and was re-arrested, the lieutenant said.

He was booked into the San Diego Central Jail for suspicion of spousal abuse, escape, obstruction and disorderly conduct, according to jail records.
