Authorities released the names Thursday of three men who were shot, one fatally, by an unidentified assailant as they sat in a car in a North County supermarket parking lot.

Martin Fuentes, 32, his 35-year-old brother, Miguel, and their companion, 28-year-old Wesley Smith, got into an argument with the assailant outside a Vons store in the 300 block of West Felicita Avenue in Escondido about 8:15 p.m. Wednesday, according to police.

The man outside the vehicle pulled a gun and opened fire into it, then fled on foot, Lt. Eric Skaja said.

Miguel Fuentes died at a trauma center. His brother and Smith were hospitalized for treatment of wounds of undisclosed severity.

The shooter was described as a Latino in his late teens or early 20s with multiple tattoos and wearing dark clothing, Skaja said.

It was unclear what prompted the dispute that led to the gunfire.
