San Diego-based Bartell Hotels announced Tuesday it has purcahsed the 211-room San Diego Hilton Airport/Harbor Island for $37.7 million.

Bartell now owns eight local hotels, among them the Sheraton La Jolla, The Dana on Mission Bay and Humphrey’s Half Moon Inn & Suites.

“The San Diego Airport Hilton is a great fit within our portfolio of waterfront hotels,” said Richard Bartell, president of Bartell Hotels. “This hotel is representative of the iconic San Diego experience and an important step in expanding our footprint in the region.”

The property was extensively renovated in the early 2000s after it became part of the Hilton Worldwide brand, according to Bartell Hotels. The nine-story building features nearly 9,000 square feet of meeting and banquet space.

Bartell Hotels, which bought the hotel from the New York-based real estate investment firm Square Mile Capital Management LLC, said it plans for an additional $5 million in upgrades.
