Famed Julian-based artist James T. Hubbell has died at the age of 92, his family announced on Monday.

He passed away on May 17 in Chula Vista with his wife Anne and family members by his side.

Hubbell is internationally known for his fantastical organic-architecture house and adjacent studios located in the mountain community of Julian, as well as the Sea Ranch Chapel in Northern California.

His artwork ranged from mosaics, wrought iron railings and gates to stained glass and sculptures, many gracing San Diego homes, churches, and public spaces.

In 2003, Hubbell and his wife decided to turn the Julian property over to the non-profit Ilan-Lael Foundation that they created.

“Together we will continue to preserve our parents’ legacy by keeping the land and buildings open to the public, while providing a center for arts and crafts experiences inspired by nature,” the family said.

The family said a future public service will be held to honor Hubbell and his life.
