The Women’s Film Festival is happening this Sunday at the Women’s Museum at NTC Liberty Station in San Diego.
Jennifer Hall Lee will present a Second Sunday Author Series at 4 p.m. She is the author of an essay called “Hillary Clinton Changed My Life,” and the director of a recent documentary in 2013 named, “Feminist: Stories from Women’s Liberation.”
Her film emphasizes the importance of feminists who protested gender inequality during the women’s liberation movement of the 1960s and 70s. She interviews a variety of feminists who lived through that time period, and discusses how women should be proud of the word “feminist” by fully understanding what the term represents.
At 6 p.m. the film festival is presenting a 2014 documentary dubbed “The Empowerment Project,” which features the dynamic journey of a group of female filmmakers. The Women’s Museum says the project has been screened nearly 300 times with audiences across the country and the world, which has started many conversations about the portrayal of women in the media. The movie shows the group drive across America as they send out positive messages, encouraging the next generation of women in their career ambitions.
“The Empowerment Project” spotlights 17 strong and powerful women who act as positive leaders in society, and demonstrates their influence across a diverse range of industries, according to the Women’s Museum.
A special guest panel will follow the film at 8:30 p.m., with speakers such as Director Sarah Moshman from “The Empowerment Project,” Director & Feminist Jennifer Hall Lee, and Local Director & Founder of The Film Consortium Jodi Cilley. The Women’s Museum says that Moshman directed “Girls Rock! Chicago” in 2010 and “Growing Up Strong: Girls on the Run” in 2012. Jody Cilley has taught video production and editing for over 11 years at colleges ranging from San Diego City College, UC San Diego, Platt College and the Media Arts Center San Diego.
“A project like this does not say oh woe is me, I’m a woman in America trying to make it. Oh, it’s so hard. It’s not about that, it’s about — we live in a man’s world and just for a month, I’d like to live in a woman’s world,” says Director Moshman in the Empowerment Project’s film trailer.
Throughout March 2 — 27, the Festival will continue to spread innovative films produced by crews of women.
