The San Diego Blood Bank announced Wednesday it needs donations of O-negative blood, the universal blood type.
A patient at an undisclosed hospital is having an emergency procedure that will require a large amount of the blood type, according to the Blood Bank. Patients with O-negative blood can’t use any other type.
“Because there isn’t time during emergencies and traumas to type blood, we maintain a supply of O-negative blood, but this emergency is likely going to deplete our supply and we are encouraging anyone who knows they are ‘O-neg’ or just wants to help support (in) the crisis to come to our of our centers or community drives,” said David Wellis, the Blood Bank’s CEO.
Donors can make an appointment and find locations online at www.sandiegobloodbank.org or by calling (619) 296-6393.
