San Diego’s SeaLions will play the Seattle Sounders Women in the second round of the Women’s Premier Soccer League playoffs on Saturday.
They earned a ticket to the next round after their weekend 1-0 win over Albuquerque FC.
Rachel Sadowski earned Player of the Match honors for the SeaLions, on their home field at Cathedral Catholic High School. It was a scoreless match until the 51st minute. Then Lili Andino took a pass from Leigh Ann Baker to put the SeaLions ahead.
The SeaLions went 7-1 during the regular season.
The team’s next playoff game is set for 11 a.m. Saturday at Rio Hondo College in Whittier. It will be preceded by a 9 a.m. match between FC Golden State and the California Storm, which has gone undefeated this season.
The WPSL Championship weekend take place July 19-21 at Neal Patterson Stadium in Stillwater, Okla. The winners of the four regionals advance to the championship.
League rosters feature elite collegiate, post-collegiate, international and standout prep players. Many of the U.S.’s most accomplished players have taken part in the WPSL, including current and past World Cup champions Brandi Chastain, Julie Foudy, Alex Morgan, Megan Rapinoe and Abby Wambach.
