San Diego State football running Juwan Washington has been named to the 2018 Paul Hornung Award watch list, the Louisville Sports Commission announced Thursday.

The commission started the award nine years ago to “promote outstanding performances by versatile college football players who often go unnoticed.”

This is the third season that an Aztec has made the preseason watch list for the award. Rashaad Penny was on the watchlist in 2016 and 2017.

Last season, Washington, while backing up for Penny, rushed for 759 yards with seven touchdowns on 127 attempts. He also returned 14 kicks for 333 yards with two touchdowns. Washing is entering this season tied for third among active Football Bowl Subdivision players with three kick return touchdowns.

Washington, earlier this month, was also named to the Maxwell Award watch list, which goes out to the collegiate player of the year.

The Aztecs kick off their season at Stanford on Friday, Aug. 31, and begin a three-game homestand against Sacramento State the following week.

The SDSU finished 2017 with a 10-3 record, its record third consecutive season with at least 10 victories.
