Brad Hand’s impressive 24-scoreless-inning streak ended with a grand slam from Scooter Gennett to propel the Cincinnati Reds over the San Diego Padres for a 10-3 victory in the four-game series finale Thursday at Great American Ball Park.
The Reds were trailing 3-2 at the bottom of the seventh inning when they scored eight unanswered points.
Kirby Yates had already walked a Reds player with another on-base and two outs when Padres manager Andy Green called Hand up to the mound. Joey Votto, who was in the middle of a 14-game hitting streak, was next up at bat.
“I want Brad Hand on the mound, lefty-lefty, 2-2 count,” Green said. “I think I’d choose that over anybody else on our team. And in Votto’s case, my guess is that he sizes a guy up. The deeper he gets into an at-bat, the better he feels.”
Hand walked Votto to load the bases, that was a mistake. After Hand struck out Andy Duvall, Gennett hit a grand slam off a slider to right center field to pull the Reds ahead of the Padres, 6-3. It was Gennett’s third grand slam of his career.
“There’s no doubt we went outside the box right there,” Green said. “But if you stay in the box, you have to expect conventional results all the time. I don’t think we’re necessarily built that way.”
Eugenio Suarez made it back-to-back homer off a fast ball to left field. Coming into Thursday’s game, Hand hasn’t allowed a run since June 10, the longest active streak in the major.
Zack Cozart put the game away with a two-run homer against Phil Maton. Votto added another long ball for good measure.
Wil Myers got San Diego on the scoreboard with a single home run in the fourth inning off a fastball to center field, his 23rd of the season. Cory Spangenberg and Jose Pirela’s single RBI each in the fifth inning gave the Padres a 3-2 lead before everything unraveled in the seventh.
Up next, the Padres travel to Chavez Ravine to face off against the Los Angeles Dodgers for the first time since the season opener. Clayton Richard will start. Game time is at 7:10 p.m.
