Various businesses and services in San Diego County are closed Monday in observance of Columbus Day.
All post offices, courts, federal offices and most banks are closed for the day, but schools in San Diego Unified School District and the city’s libraries remain open.
San Diego City Hall also remains open, and the City Council will meet at 2 p.m. to discuss various items.
Columbus Day is one of 10 holidays observed by the federal government and marks Christopher Columbus’ 1492 arrival in North America. Certain cities and states have replaced Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day to recognize the native populations that were displaced or wiped out by the often violent colonization of the Americas by Columbus and other European explorers.
