The city will close the Miramar Landfill on Sundays beginning Oct. 7 as a way to reduce costs, officials said Thursday.
The Sunday closure is expected to save the city about $500,000 annually in reduced staffing, contractual services, heavy equipment usage, fuel and maintenance, according to Paul Brencick of city Environmental Services.
Starting next year, the landfill will also be closed on Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day, Brencick said. The city has posted signs and flyers about the schedule change at the landfill, located at 5180 Convoy St.
Allan Co., which handles recycling for the city at the landfill, will also close the Recycling Center on Sundays and holidays, Brencick said.
An updated Sunday and holiday closure schedule is available online at https://www.sandiego.gov/environmental-services/miramar#General.
