City Councilman Chris Cate is proposing local regulations on marijuana advertising to protect children in residential communities of San Diego.

Cate said that while the city has passed ordinances to regulate legal marijuana sales under Proposition 64, it must also regulate advertising. He proposed rules governing advertising on billboards, newspapers and websites within the city limits.
The regulations outlined in a memorandum on Thursday include:
- Restrict marijuana billboard advertisements from being located within 1,000 feet of schools, parks, libraries, churches and similar residential destinations.
- Apply the billboard regulations to all marijuana outlets, including delivery services and online platforms, such as Weedmaps and Eaze.
- Make the first offense an infraction and the second a misdemeanor.
- Prohibit unlicensed and illegal marijuana outlets and delivery services from advertising on websites, billboards, newspapers, magazines and other publications within the city limits.
“I believe my proposals are fair and reasonable regulations that will provide our Code Enforcement Division and our San Diego Police Department with additional tools to better regulate marijuana advertisements within our city and protect our children and families,” said Cate.
The councilman represents District 6, which includes Sorrento Valley and Kearny Mesa, two neighborhoods with multiple marijuana dispensaries.
