The Republican Party of San Diego County this week voted to endorse Escondido Mayor Sam Abed for supervisor.

Abed, who is hoping to replace Democrat Dave Roberts, received the endorsement over fellow Republican and Encinitas Mayor Kristin Gaspar.

“Endorsing one Republican over another requires a 2/3 vote threshold and rarely happens,” GOP Chairman Tony Krvaric said. “Clearly Sam Abed’s long-time and steadfast commitment to Republican principles and values earned him the support of committee members and we are proud to endorse him.”

More than two-thirds of the committee members chose Abed.

Roberts has had a rocky term as Supervisor. The former Solana Beach councilman faced allegations of improper treatment of his staff. The claims eventually forced the county to settle for $310,000.
