In the wake of a bi-partisan Senate report that found the IRS mismanaged tax exemptions for conservative Tea Party groups, Rep. Darrell Issa on Thursday called for the removal of IRS Commissoiner John Koskinen.
Issa, who had earlier investigated the the issue in the House of Representatives, said the IRS was guilty of “shameful political targeting” under the direction of Lois Lerner, a former IRS official who headed the tax-exempt unit.
“The facts in this case speak for themselves. There is no path towards restoring Americans’ trust in the IRS that does not include the removal of IRS Commissioner John Koskinen,” said Issa, who represents north San Diego and south Orange counties.
The Senate Finance Committee, led by Utah Republican Orrin Hatch and Oregon Democrat Ron Wyden, found that the IRS division overseeing tax-exempt groups severely mismanaged the applications of Tea Party groups seeking tax-exempt status.
However, Democrats and and Republicans on the committee could not agree on whether the mismanagement was politically motivated.
