Anthony Bernal, a long-time member of San Diego City Councilman Todd Gloria‘s staff, on Sunday officially announced his candidacy for the 3rd District in the 2016 election.

“My campaign is not about politics and it’s not about personal gain. It’s about you, and putting our neighborhoods first,” he said in an email to potential supporters.

He cites investment in infrastructure, more affordable housing, police staffing and recruitment, support for small business, and a dependable water supply as key issues facing San Diego.

Bernal has worked since 2008 as Gloria’s director of business and community projects. He is a graduate of the University of the Pacific and a former construction manager. He and his wife Amy live in downtown San Diego.

District 3 includes North Park, South Park, Golden Hill, Normal Heights, University Heights, Hillcrest, Old Town, Mission Hills, Bankers Hill, Middletown, Little Italy, and downtown San Diego.

Gloria is completing his second term an cannot run for a third.

Chris Ward, chief of staff to Sen. Marty Block, has also announced his candidacy for the seat.
