Former Chula Vista mayor Steve Padilla asked for a recount Tuesday after the Registrar of Voters certified John McCann as the winner by a 2-vote margin in a close Chula Vista City Council race.
The certified results show McCann with 18,448 votes to Padilla’s 18,446 in the race for Seat 1 on the council in San Diego County’s second-largest city.
“With a razor thin margin of just two votes out of 37,000 cast, it is essential that every vote is counted and accounted for,” Padilla said in a statement. “To ensure that every vote is counted correctly, and to ensure our community can rely on complete and accurate election results, it is time for a recount of the Chula Vista City Council election.”
McCann, a former member of the council, is currently the board president for the Sweetwater Union High School District.
“We cannot thank our supporters enough, and our campaign workers who were so amazing!” McCann said on his campaign’s Facebook page. “This is the very best evidence that every vote counts!”
