There is every indication that 2019 will be a pivotal year for California. We have a new, progressive governor, Donald Trump has California in his crosshairs and presidential contenders will be flocking here because of the new early 2020 primary.
Times of San Diego is striving to help our readers navigate the new year, with timely coverage of news that impacts San Diego. We’re not partisan in this divided era; our goal is simply to report the facts.
We published over 7,000 articles in 2018 and served a record 2.6 million readers. As our independent news website enters its sixth year of operation, our mission is unchanged: to provide accurate, comprehensive and fair coverage of the major local news developments.
The San Diego community is noticing. In October, for the third year in a row, we were judged the best local news website by the San Diego Press Club.
Times of San Diego is committed to free publication. We’ll never erect a restrictive “pay wall” like legacy media organizations. We believe freely available news is crucial to the functioning of local democracy. That’s why we rely on advertising and your contributions.
A growing number of readers are contributing directly to Times of San Diego — paying what they wish to help us cover the news. Over the past year, contributions of over $3,000 have helped us add 150 hours of reporting. But that $3,000 represents just a few percentage points of our budget.
A small monthly donation — the cost of one latte — can have a big impact over time. For example, if just 100 more readers sign up to contribute $5 per month, we could significantly expand coverage of the California state legislature in 2019.
