The independent news website was read by 2.37 million people over the past 365 days, up 22 percent from 1.94 million during the same period in 2016 and 2017.

Traffic has grown as the number, breadth and impact of the site’s articles have increased. The website’s staff of six contributing editors and photographers post between 20 and 25 articles daily comprising the essential news in San Diego.

On Tuesday, for example, the staff provided extensive coverage of President Trump’s visit to San Diego — from what the President said to how local officials reacted — while also reporting on the historic deployment of Marine F-35 fighters aboard a Navy amphibious assault ship and testimony in the trial of Tieray Jones, accused of murdering stepson Jahi Turner 16 years ago.

Over the past year, Times of San Diego was recognized by Feedspot as one of the top 100 news sites worldwide and by the San Diego Press Club as the best news site in San Diego. The press club top award was the second in a row.

The website’s audience continues to be young, mobile and local. Over the past year, 51 percent of readers were aged 18 to 45, a profile that is considerably younger than for newspapers and local television news.

The website is optimized to load quickly on mobile devices, so most readers — 56 percent — used smartphones to access it. There’s no app to download and install; just enter the URL and the site adjusts the the size of any device.

Google Anaytics counted 42 percent of readers in San Diego County, and another 10 percent elsewhere in Southern California. With coverage of the military, the border and news-making San Diego companies like Qualcomm and Sempra Energy, the site’s reach is national and even international.

Times of San Diego is supported by local and national advertising — including Google, AOL and other networks — and donations by supportive readers.
