Times’ mission is to provide comprehensive, accurate and unbiased local news coverage in a format designed to appeal to the busy Millennials and Gen-Xers who are the future leaders of San Diego.
“The Times offers its readers online, outstanding comprehensive news,” said Block in announcing the recognition. “It’s an invaluable service to San Diego and shines as an example of how small businesses serve California communities every day.”
Seven months later, Times of San Diego was ranked the best news website in the region by the San Diego Press Club at its annual Excellence in Journalism Awards. It was also singled out for the best election coverage as the staff received a total of 20 awards..
And traffic continues to grow. The site was read by 1.94 million people over the past 12 months, an increase of 3 percent from the previous year. Half of those readers were younger than 45 years of age.
Times of San Diego’s staff of seven contributing editors and photographers publish 20 to 25 articles a day on all aspects of life in San Diego County, from politics to crime to business, education and sports.
Nearly 4,000 readers subscribe to the daily newsletter, which is delivered at 8 a.m. with the top local news from the previous 24 hours.
The success of Times of San Diego led to the launch in late 2016 of a sister website covering Los Angeles — MyNewsLA.com. That website now boasts a monthly readership of more than 500,000.
