The signature Fleet Week parade of ships will return to San Diego on Sept. 10 after a seven-year hiatus, the Fleet Week Foundation confirmed Wednesday.

“We are very excited to welcome back the Sea & Air Parade to this year’s schedule of events,” said Dennis DuBard, 2016 president of the foundation.

“This celebration allows us a chance to witness the outstanding service that our sea service personnel and their families provide to our region,” he said.

News reports last month suggested the parade would return, but the first official confirmation by the foundation and the Navy came Wednesday.

The parade will run the length of San Diego Bay, beginning off Shelter Island with viewing areas all along the bay, from noon until 2 p.m.

For the first time since 2008, amphibious ships, destroyers, Marine counter-measure ships, submarines and ships from the Coast Guard as well as the Canadian Navy will participate.

In addition there will be amphibious landing craft, demonstrations of SEAL capabilities, Coast Guard search and rescue craft and a fly-over by Navy aircraft.

“Your Navy in San Diego is proud to invite you to the Fleet Week Sea & Air Parade,” said Rear Adm. Mark Rich, commander of Navy Region Southwest. “This is the first one in eight years, so it’s an event you won’t want to miss.”
