A series of community workshops will offer preparedness guidance this fall to residents of San Diego-area communities at high risk of wildfire hazards, authorities announced Thursday.
The three half-day “Fire Operations in the Wildland Urban Interface” meetings, led by the Fire Safe Council of San Diego County and local firefighting officials, will teach participants how wildland blazes start and spread, and provide them with strategies on how to protect themselves and their property from back-country fires, according to organizers.
“For anyone living in the WUI, creating and maintaining defensible space is a requirement,” said Ann Baldridge, vice president of the council and executive director of the Resource Conservation District of Greater San Diego County. “This workshop (series) builds on the principles of defensible space and provides valuable information about how to see your home and community through the eyes of a first responder, as well as how to better prepare for wildfire.”
The sessions are scheduled for Nov, 19 at 10:00 A.M. at Santa Ysabel Nature Center, 22135 state Route 79; Dec. 3 at 9:00 A.M. at Cal Fire Station No. 40, 31577 state Route 94, Campo; and Dec. 10 at 9:00 A.M. at Julian Library, 1850 state Route 78.
