California ranks as the top state for American singles, with a new study out Monday citing widespread opportunities for dating, romance and fun.
The personal finance website WalletHub used 30 key indicators of dating friendliness to compare the states. The data ranged from the percentage of single adults to online-dating opportunities to restaurants per capita.
New York ranked second, Florida third and Texas fourth. Largely rural West Virginia was dead last on the scale.
California came in first in the category of “romance and fun” and second in “dating opportunities,” allowing it to overcome a 50th ranking in dating expense. South Dakota was the cheapest state for dating.
“Finding places that have the infrastructure to support both professional and personal goals — which can differ widely among people — is important,” said Theresa E. DiDonato, a psychology professor at Loyola University Maryland, in explaining the results.
“If people are hoping to meet romantic partners, living a day-to-day life in which you have opportunities to encounter a wide range of possible partners can be helpful,” she said.
