The meal delivery nonprofit service Mama’s Kitchen Wednesday will distribute pies purchased in support of its 15th annual Mama’s Pies Thanksgiving Bake Sale.

Roughly 20 local bakeries and catering companies baked thousands of pies for the sale, which benefits Mama’s Kitchen’s efforts to combat hunger among local residents who have critical illnesses like cancer and HIV. The organization currently provides nutrition assistance and education to more than 1,600 men, women and children countywide.

Mama’s Kitchen met its goal of $140,000 raised during last year’s bake sale and aimed to raise at least $150,000 during this year’s six-week sale, which the organization says will fund the delivery of some 51,000 meals for residents with critical illnesses.

Volunteers with the AIDS Assistance Fund founded the organization in 1990 to support HIV and AIDS patients. Since then, Mama’s Kitchen has expanded its services to residents who have cancer, congestive heart failure and Type II diabetes and deal with hunger.

Residents who purchased pies during the bake sale can pick up their pies at 22 sites around the county, including 20 Wells Fargo bank branches. A limited number of pumpkin, apple, Dutch apple and pecan pies can also be purchased at Mama’s Kitchen from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for $25 each. Residents can call 619-233-6262 for information on last-minute pie purchases.
