Hundreds of elementary students in Barrio Logan — some of them homeless — received backpacks full of school supplies Tuesday from Mayor Kevin Faulconer and his nonprofit.

Faulconer was joined by his wife Katherine, Police Chief David Nisleit, San Diego Unified Superintendent Cindy Marten, police and fire personnel, and volunteers from the San Diego Association of Realtors at Perkins Elementary School.

“They kids are so excited—the smiles on their faces,” said Faulconer. “This makes a real difference. The kids are our future.”

It was the third of five backpack distributions by One San Diego, the nonprofit founded by Faulconer and his wife five years ago, scheduled at local schools before classes resume on Monday.

More than 3,000 students will receive the backpacks, which filled with school supplies are valued at over $50. Faulconer said the backpacks are a confidence builder for young students and a “cash boost to families.”

The “We Have Your Back” distributions are intended to not only help school children but build community bonds with the police and fire departments.
