Catholics in San Diego will mark Good Friday and Easter with a Stations of the Cross procession processions and special celebrations of Mass on Thursday evening, Friday and Sunday.
Easter marks the end of Lent and is the holiest day of the Christian calendar. Good Friday memorializes Jesus’ death and crucifixion. Easter represents his resurrection and the fulfillment of the prophecy of salvation.
Special Easter events around the San Diego Catholic Diocese include:
Holy Thursday Mass — Bishop Robert McElroy will celebrate Mass at 7 p.m. at St. Joseph Cathedral, 1535 3rd Avenue in downtown San Diego. Twelve individuals from the parish will have their feet washed, representing the service and charity of Christ.
Good Friday Pro-Life Stations of the Cross — At noon Bishop McElroy will lead hundreds of faithful in walking the Stations of the Cross, bringing the pro-life message of Jesus to downtown streets. Participants will gather on the east side of St. Joseph Cathedral, at 4th and Beech, and walk west on Beech Street to Front Street, then down Front Street to the old federal building at Front and Broadway, where they will pray the Stations of the Cross, then walk back to the Cathedral, arriving about 1 p.m.
Good Friday Live Stations of the Cross — From noon to 3 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe, 1770 Kearney Avenue in Barrio Logan. Parishioners will meet in the school patio and walk through the streets of Barrio Logan, re-enacting Jesus’s final hours and crucifixion, ending at Tepeyac Hall at bottom of hill (down Kearney).
Good Friday Mass — At 3 p.m. Bishop McElroy will lead a Mass at St. Joseph Cathedral. The service will includes the passing of a very large cross among the parishioners, with each person helping to lift it.
Good Friday Mass — At 3 p.m. Auxiliary Bishop John Dolan will celebrate Mass at St. Rose of Lima, 293 H Street in Chula Vista.
Good Friday Live Stations of the Cross — From 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at St. John of the Cross, 8086 Broadway in Lemon Grove. Parishioners will re-enact Jesus’s final hours and crucifixion on the streets around the parish.
Easter Vigil — At 7:45 p.m. Auxiliary Bishop Dolan will lead a service in which eight individuals are baptized at St. Therese of Carmel in Carmel Valley.
Easter Vigil — At 8 p.m. Bishop McElroy will lead a service at St. Joseph Cathedral in which 8 adults and 17 teens will be baptized.
