Volunteers, Clothing Donations Needed for San Diego Homeless Fair

Civic leaders Wednesday urged residents to volunteer their time or donate clothing to a resource fair for the homeless to be held next week.

The 12th Project Homeless Connect – Downtown San Diego on Jan. 31 will be a one-stop spot for connecting the homeless to resources such as flu and hepatitis A vaccines, haircuts, housing opportunities and state identification cards. It is put on by the San Diego Housing Commission.

An additional 50 volunteers are still needed to help attendees navigate the fair and help serve a meal provided by Father Joe’s Villages.

Volunteers can be people with any — or no — expertise, but organizers made an open invitation to those who may have a particular expertise, such as dentists or other medical professionals who wish to offer services to the homeless.

Last year’s fair served more than 1,000 people.

“Volunteers are essential to this resource fair,” City Councilman Chris Cate said.

Donations of new or gently used backpacks and closed-toe shoes, as well as  new socks and blankets, are still needed. Items can be dropped off at Golden Hall at the San Diego Community Concourse, 202 C St., on Jan. 30 between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Volunteers and service providers can register on the San Diego Housing Commission’s website, www.sdhc.org.
