California is supposedly suffering under high taxes and high costs, but a new study finds residents of the Golden State are the fourth happiest in America.
An analysis by WalletHub based on “happiness” research ranked only Minnesota, Utah and Hawaii ahead of California. The bottom four states were West Virginia, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Alabama.
WalletHub ranked states based on 28 metrics ranging from depression rate to amount of sleep to sports participation, safety and income growth.
Compared to other states, California residents have low rates of depression and play a lot of sports, which offsets one of the lowest rates of income growth.
“People determine their own happiness,” said WalletHub. “Where we choose to live can also influence our level of happiness.”
WalletHub is a Washington-based website that provides financial information and credit tools for consumers.
