More than 100 vintage, antique and handmade vendors will gather in San Diego for the Junk in the Trunk Vintage Market. The event takes place on July 15 and July 16 in Point Loma.

If you’re new to antiquing, here are five tips you’ll want to know when attending the Junk in the Trunk event.

1. Thoroughly inspect the item: There is nothing worse than scoring an amazing treasure to get it home and find that it either doesn’t work or has a crack, rip or tear in a place that makes it unusable. When shopping for vintage items we always recommend taking the time to look over the item(s). If you are buying furniture, open drawers, look underneath the item or flip it over to view any markings or cracks.

2. Have a list of spaces and items you are searching for along with the measurements: We recommend always carrying a list of items that you are looking for and measurements of areas in your home that you are looking to complete. Markets and vintage shops can be quite overwhelming, so having even a general list can help you focus. And having the measurements will ensure that you don’t want to miss out on the perfect piece because you are waiting for someone in your house to respond and let you know if it will fit in your house. After all we know how easy it is to get lost in a vintage store or flea market.

3. Look beyond its intended use: Re-purposing vintage is one of our favorite things to do. Whether it’s an old crate that’s turned into a shelf, a dresser turned into a vanity or an old trophy used to display flowers, there are so many unique ways to re-use your vintage finds and bring new life into your home. So, think outside the box as you are scouring for those unique treasures.

4. Only buy items you love, no matter the price: An unknown author once said, “Nothing haunts us like the things we didn’t buy”. Instead of settling for items that you like, focus on those that you love. Sometimes you find that one-of-a-kind item that you just can’t live without or might be over budget or you may not be sure what you will do with it. Those are the pieces that will forever haunt you if you leave it behind. If you love it, you will find a place for it. Say no to the items that don’t inspire and yes to those that do………even if it’s over your budget.

5. Search online to check the background or price of the item: It never hurts to do a quick web search to make sure you are not overpaying for an item. You may have a rare and valuable item on your hands or it may be overpriced. Use sites such as EBay, Etsy, Google and others to learn more about the item.
