Papa Doug and Geniya Manchester and their children.

San Diego developer Papa Doug Manchester and his wife Geniya announced Thursday a $1 million donation to Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women & Newborns.

The gift, made in honor of the care the Manchester family has received at the hospital, will result in the naming of the Papa Doug and Geniya Manchester Family Labor and Delivery Unit at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital.

“This gift is a reflection on all that is good in life, the importance of family and community, and the excitement of a better future ahead,” said Manchester. “We give thanks and praise to God for the gift of all the lives that are born here.”

The gift was presented at the hospital’s annual women’s luncheon, an event that honors the patients and caregivers at San Diego’s only women’s hospital

Sharp Mary Birch is is the largest maternity hospital in San Diego with more than 9,000 babies delivered annually.

Opened in November 1992 with philanthropic support from the community, the hospital is approaching its 25th anniversary and has launched a $12 million fundraising campaign.
