California is the 20th best state for doctors, according to a study released Monday by WalletHub.

The personal finance website compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across 11 key metrics. The data set ranges from “physicians’ monthly average starting salary” to “number of hospitals per capita” to “medically underserved areas or populations.”

Here’s how California ranked in the categories with 1 being the best and 25 being average):

9th – Projected Physicians per Capita (2022)
24th – Punitive State Medical Boards
9th – Malpractice Award Payouts per Capita
11th – Malpractice Liability Insurance Rate
25th – Number of Hospitals per Capita
18th – Number of Physicians per Capita
