County Animal Services coupons are $50 higher this year, in fact.

Coupons for female dogs, cats and rabbits will now take $100 off the regular price of a spay/neuter procedure while coupons for male dogs, cats and rabbits will see a discount of $75, the county says.

The county lists 76 veterinarians who will perform the surgery at a reduced cost.

Animal Services is particularly concerned about cats this time of year, the county says. Females can get pregnant while they are still nursing a litter.

“We are inundated with hundreds of unwanted kittens every year during kitten season,” said County Animal Services Director Dawn Danielson. “By offering the discount coupons during breeding season, we’re hoping to see a decrease in the numbers of unwanted pets we start getting in April and peaking in May.”

Up to six coupons per family are available to residents in the unincorporated areas of the county and Animal Services’ six contract cities of San Diego, Santee, Carlsbad, Solana Beach, Encinitas and Del Mar.

Pet owners have 60 days to use the coupons and 30 days to return them to Animal Services to get reimbursed.

Residents can pick up the coupons from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday at any one of the three animal care facilities or by calling Animals Services at (619) 767-2632.
