San Diego County residents will have plenty of fun opportunities to welcome the new year. Here are Times of San Diego’s picks for this weekend.

Jump into 2016

The La Jolla Cove Swim Club will host its annual Polar Bear Plunge at 10 a.m. at La Jolla Shores. The local tradition encourages brave swimmers to the beach for a non-competitive and cold plunge. Swimmers can warm up after with a bowl of hot chili.

Cruising to the new year

San Diego International Auto Show will run through the entire weekend and features more than 400 cars. Visitors will get a chance to see 2016 and 2017 model-year vehicles and test drive some of the new rides.

Go Aztecs

What’s a better way to bring in the new year than to cheer for your fellow San Diegans? San Diego State University’s women’s basketball team will face Utah State at 2 p.m. Ticket prices range from $6 to $20.

All aboard!

The public is invited to check out the visiting Hawaiian Chieftain and Lady Washington at the Maritime Museum of San Diego‘s Cannon Battles on the Bay. Ships will depart from the Embarcadero and passengers will see canons sound off. The event will take place from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Ticket prices range from $47 to $91 and includes admission to the museum.

Harmony in Balboa Park

Enjoy the start of your new year by listening to classical melodies at Casa del Prado in Balboa Park. The San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory will rehearse in the park and invites the public to hear their impressive tunes. The rehearsal is held from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Climb the tower

Start the new year with a hike up the California Tower. The tower, which was re-opened in December 2014 after being closed for 80 years, features 125 steps and ends with a spectacular view of San Diego. Ticket prices range from $10 to $22.50.
