with a small monthly contribution
The event, which has raised nearly $6.5 million for the center over 22 years, starts with surfing at 7 a.m., and the the luau is set to follow at noon. The lunchtime event will include entertainment by Tim Flannery, the musician and former baseball player-turned-coach.
“The commitment to support cancer research that is demonstrated each year at the luau and Legends of Surfing Invitational is truly inspiring,” UCSD Chancellor Pradeep Khosla said. “We are grateful to have dedicated partners in the San Diego community who are also helping to advance our mission of transforming patient care.”
The annual Rell Sunn Award, presented to someone who has made a difference in the battle against cancer, and embodies the “aloha spirit,” will be given to Dr. Carl June of the University of Pennsylvania. June’s work has led to advances in immunotherapy, a treatment that harnesses the body’s own immune system to fight cancer.
The award is named in memory of Rell Kapolioka’ehukai Sunn, a Hawaiian surfer and luau supporter who lost her battle with breast cancer.
All proceeds will support research and patient care at the Moores Cancer Center.
