Distinguished alumni of the region’s community colleges are scheduled to be honored Thursday night at a gala in Mission Valley.

Among the honorees at the event at the DoubleTree Hotel are Artie Ojeda of NBC7/39, San Diego City College; county Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister, San Diego Mesa College; former San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders, San Diego Miramar College; and ex-NFL placekicker Brad Daluiso, Grossmont College.

The gala will be hosted by Martha Barnette and Grant Barrett of public radio’s “A Way With Words.”

“Grant and I and the rest of the ‘Way With Words’ team are delighted to join forces with our local community colleges to honor their distinguished alumni, and honor our shared missions of promoting intellectual curiosity, academic achievement and better human communication,” Barnette said.

Others being honored include Darren Greenhalgh, a city public works executive who led the San Diego Central Library construction project, Cuyamaca College; Aaron Byzak, founder of Hazel’s Army and director of Government and Community Affairs at UCSD Health Sciences, MiraCosta College; Lori Holt Pfeiler, former Escondido mayor and executive director of San Diego Habitat for Humanity, Palomar College; Glen Degler, a projects supervisor for the San Diego Unified School District, San Diego Continuing Education; and Olivia Graeve, a UC San Diego professor noted for her work in nanomaterials manufacturing, Southwestern College.
