Police took a possible suspect into custody Thursday after a report of a man pointing a rifle toward a playground at a Clairemont school prompted a lockdown at the campus.

Several students reported seeing a man brandishing a gun at a home near John Muir School in the 4400 block of Mount Herbert Avenue shortly before 3 p.m., according to San Diego police.

Campus administrators secured students in their classrooms while officers surrounded the Mount Laudo Drive house, just south of the school, which has grades from kindergarten through high school.

About 3:40 p.m., a man complied with officers’ orders to exit the residence and was taken into custody, SDPD Detective Gary Hassen said. The detainee’s name was not immediately available.

No gunshots or injuries were reported.
