A wildfire that burned over 188 acres of rugged hilly terrain in the Pine Valley area was 25% contained Tuesday, but firefighters had stopped its forward rate of spread.
The blaze erupted for unknown reasons around 11:45 a.m. Monday off Pine Creek Road in Noble Canyon, according to Cleveland National Forest public affairs. Within three hours, the burn area had grown to about 120 acres, forestry officials reported, with no immediate threat to structures.
The flames pushed to the northeast through grass and heavy brush, away from populated areas, as 300 personnel on the ground, aboard air tankers and water-dropping helicopters worked to subdue the fire.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
