Former Chula Vista Little League star Micah Pietila-Wiggs has died from injuries suffered Saturday when he crashed a pickup truck into a concrete barrier near San Ysidro, authorities reported Monday.
Pietila-Wiggs, 21, was traveling alone in his Ford F-150 when — for reasons still under investigation — he collided with the road barrier and rolled over on southbound Interstate 5 around 5:16 a.m. Saturday, according to the California Highway Patrol.
He was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
The Chula Vista resident first made headlines when he helped take the Eastlake team to the 2013 Little League World Series.
Pietila-Wiggs played four years of varsity baseball at East Lake High School and went on to play baseball for one season at the University of New Mexico. He transferred to San Diego State University this year.
No other information about the crash was released by authorities as the investigation is ongoing.
