Authorities Monday released the name of the person who died when a car hit the center divider, went across Interstate 8 and off the side of the road in Alpine.

On Saturday evening, Vincent Esquivel, 29, of Descanso, was traveling west on the freeway when, for unknown reasons, he lost control of his vehicle and drove off the highway and down a 200-foot embankment, according to the Medical Examiner’s Office.

A witness told the California Highway Patrol the vehicle struck the center divider then over-corrected and went back across and off the roadway.

Esquivel was ejected from his vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene, the CHP said.
