A San Diego police officer suffered an injury to his face early Friday morning when he was assaulted in the Gaslamp District by a man dressed in a Jesus Halloween costume, police said.
It happened around 1 a.m. in the 700 block of Fifth Avenue while officers were arresting a person who had been ejected from a bar, San Diego police Sgt. Matthew Botkin said.
During the arrest, a man wearing a Jesus costume approached a San Diego police officer and either punched or elbowed the officer in the face before running away, Botkin said.
The officer, whose name was not released, was taken to a hospital for treatment of a one-inch laceration to his face that required stitches, the sergeant said.
No detailed description of the assailant was immediately available.
Anyone with information about the suspect or the attack was asked to call SDPD Sgt. Michael Stirk at 619-744-9561.
