A brush fire alongside Interstate 8 in the Fletcher Hills area briefly threatened homes Tuesday afternoon until crews were able to subdue the flames.

The blaze erupted for unknown reasons shortly after 1 p.m. on a hillside west of the freeway, near West Main Street and South Travelodge Drive in El Cajon, according to Heartland Fire & Rescue.

The flames climbed up the slope toward a residential neighborhood, scorching about 1 1/2 acres and moving to within roughly 50 feet of homes on Berenda Place and Chiswick Court before firefighters halted the spread of the blaze, said Sonny Saghera, spokesman for the East County emergency-services agency.

It took personnel about 45 minutes to gain control of the fire, which caused no reported structural damage or injuries.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
