The San Diego Police Department said it plans to set up a DUI and licence checkpoint somewhere in the city limits on Friday night as the Labor Day weekend begins.
Officers will be stopping drivers from 11 p.m. Friday until 3 a.m. Saturday to check for alcohol and marijuana impairment as well as proper licensing.
The checkpoints are regularly announced in advance because of the deterrent effect on people who might drink or smoke to excess and then drive.
“Research shows that crashes involving an impaired driver can be reduced by up to 20 percent when well-publicized proactive DUI operations are conducted routinely,” according to the police department.
On Saturday, the California Highway Patrol will be holding a checkpoint somewhere in the Carlsbad city limits.
