San Diego Police said Monday they think a couple in their 50s found dead inside a Torrey Highlands home were murdered by their son, who then committed suicide.

About 10 p.m. Saturday, a dispatcher received a call asking officers to check the welfare of a couple living in the 7400 block of Via Rivera.

The officers forced their way inside the home and discovered the bodies of an Asian man and woman in their 50s with trauma to the upper body.

A day earlier, at about 2 a.m., police investigated the suicide of a man who had jumped to his death from the Eastgate Mall overpass over Interstate 805.

“At this point in the investigation, San Diego Police Department homicide detectives believe the
male who committed suicide on Aug, 16, 2019 murdered his parents in their home and then
committed suicide by jumping off the freeway overpass,” police said in a statement.

“Detectives will continue investigating this case to determine a motive for the homicides.”

The identities of the three people have not been released.

The husband and wife — who had been expected in San Francisco earlier in the day but failed to arrive, prompting concerned family members to call the police — had suffered traumatic injuries to their upper bodies, said police Lt. Martha Sainz.

The names of the deceased were being withheld pending family notification.
