A small brush fire tied up traffic on state Route 54 in Bonita during the heart of the Friday evening rush hour.
The vegetation fire limited traffic to two lanes on the eastbound side, past Briarwood Road approaching state Route 125. The tie-up spread along the highway for miles.
The California Highway Patrol responded, along with the Chula Vista Fire Department and the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.
Flames broke out on the right shoulder at about 4:30 p.m. and spread up the highway embankment toward homes. Deputies fanned out into the neighborhoods in case evacuations were necessary.
Less than an acre burned in the fire and the cause was unknown.
