An intoxicated man was hospitalized Wednesday morning with serious injuries he suffered when he fell from his wheelchair and was struck by a vehicle in San Marcos.

Deputies responded to reports that a vehicle had struck a pedestrian at Nordahl Road and the westbound state Route 78 onramp crosswalk about 4:40 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Deputy Cornelius Van Nieuwenhuyzen of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.

A preliminary investigation determined the man in the wheelchair had rolled off the sidewalk at Nordahl Road and the highway onramp and fell from the wheelchair, then was struck by a vehicle driven by a 39-year-old woman turning right onto the onramp, Van Nieuwenhuyzen said.

The victim was taken to a hospital with serious, but non-life- threatening injuries, he said.

The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.

Alcohol was a factor in the crash on the part of the victim, Van Nieuwenhuyzen said.

San Marcos Traffic Division detectives were investigating the crash.
