A man suffered serious injuries Friday morning when he was run over by his own dump truck, which then hit a gas line in Spring Valley, causing a leak and prompting evacuations, authorities said.
Dispatchers received a call around 7:45 a.m. from a person reporting that a man had been run over while chasing after a dump truck on Valencia Street near Clegg Court, California Highway Patrol Officer Tommy Strickland said.
The runaway truck apparently ruptured a 3/4-inch gas riser, which connects to the meter box, causing a gas leak, San Diego Gas & Electric spokesman Wes Jones said.
Firefighters evacuated a dozen residences nearby and told several other residents nearby to shelter-in-place, San Miguel Fire & Rescue Battalion Chief Gehrig Browning said.
The orders were lifted about 10 minutes after the gas leak was capped at 9:20 a.m., Browning said. No ill effects from the vapors were immediately reported, he said.
The dump truck driver was taken to a hospital for treatment of major injuries, Strickland said.
CHP officers were investigating the circumstances leading up to the crash.
