Authorities Tuesday publicly identified a man who was fatally injured when his car veered off a North County road at high speed — possibly during a race with another driver — and smashed into a tree.

Emergency crews responding to reports of a car crash on Melrose Drive in Oceanside shortly after 2 a.m. Feb. 8 found Eric Daub, 37, unconscious and suffering from severe head injuries in the driver’s seat of a crumpled Subaru Impreza, according to police.

Medics took Daub to a hospital, where the Oceanside resident died eight days later, Sgt. Rick Davis said.

Investigators believe that alcohol “was a factor” in the accident and that Daub might have been engaging in a speed contest with another motorist when he lost control of his car near Meadowbrook Drive, the sergeant said.
