Three women were killed Tuesday and three other people were injured when a pickup plowed into a passenger-packed car at a busy intersection near Buccaneer Beach.
The fatal broadside crash occurred at South Coast Highway and Oceanside Boulevard shortly before 1 p.m., according to police.
Two of the six occupants of the passenger car died at the scene, Sgt. Gabe Jimenez said. Medics took the other three to hospitals, where a third woman was pronounced dead, he said.
The conditions of the others who had been in the sedan were unavailable as of early evening.
The driver of the truck was not seriously injured in the wreck, according to police. His name was not immediately released.
It was unclear who was at fault for the collision, which left the road crossing closed past nightfall.
