A car struck and killed a pedestrian walking on Interstate 8 in the mountains east of San Diego early Saturday morning.

The crash happened a little after 5 a.m. on westbound Interstate 8 just before Japatul Valley Road near Viejas Casino, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Cal Fire Capt. Issac Sanchez said emergency crews responded to the crash, but the victim had severe injuries and died at the scene.

It wasn’t immediately clear why the person was walking on the freeway, and no details were available on the driver.
