A 28-year-old motorist was killed Monday in a solo car crash on a rural North County road.

Notified by the driver’s father, who received an alert from a GPS device notifying him that his son had been involved in an accident, authorities searched the area amid heavy fog, finding the wrecked sedan about 7:15 a.m., Latulippe said.

The man was heading downhill on a curving stretch of Pauma Heights Road, east of Cole Grade Road in Valley Center, when he lost control of his Mazda 3 for unknown reasons about 5:45 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

The car veered off the roadway at high speed, vaulted over a dirt shoulder, overturned and tumbled about 500 feet down a steep roadside embankment, said CHP public-affairs Officer Mark Latulippe.

The driver was dead inside the car. His name was withheld pending family notification.
