The deadly gunfire at Pier 32 Marina in National City was reported about 4 a.m., according to police.

Witnesses reported that a man emerged from a boat and cried out for help, shouting that he had shot and killed an intruder, 10News reported.

Police determined that the unidentified trespasser had released the mooring lines of the yacht and set it adrift, then tried to start its engines before forcing his way into the cabin and attacking an occupant, said Sgt. Chris Cameon.

During an ensuing fight, the victim shot the intruder, who died at the scene.

Medics took the victim to a hospital for evaluation of injuries he suffered in the scuffle. It was unclear if he might face any criminal charges in connection with the shooting.

A woman and a dog also were in the boat when the intruder boarded, according to police.

No outstanding suspects were being sought in the case, officials said.
